Can AI be useful for healthcare communications?
AI is taking the healthcare profession by storm, and its advantageous possibilities for the diagnosis and treatment of patients are seemingly endless. But what about healthcare communications? Is AI up to the task?
As you can guess, the high level of technical accuracy and iteration needed for healthcare communications would seem to limit the use of the more general AI tools available, such as those aimed at writers and designers. However, we believe there are still areas of healthcare communications where AI can be put to good use. Keep reading to find out what this is.
The healthcare stock library issue
As creatives within the healthcare communications world will know, some of the most common stock libraries have license agreements that prohibit the use of their images for “sensitive subjects”. These agreements effectively rule out using their images within materials for sensitive healthcare areas, such as sexual or mental health.
While some libraries prohibit the use of their images entirely for these purposes, others only limit their use where the people within the image are recognisable. Whilst at Anytime After Nine we’ve carefully selected the libraries we use to avoid these issues as much as possible, sometimes the image selection or preferences from a client can complicate things. This is where AI can come in handy.
How can AI help alleviate those issues?
Generated images of people are not bound by the same license agreements, meaning there are no restrictions on how they can be used. And with the rise of AI tools such as the generative features within the Adobe suite, Dall-E, Stable Diffusion, and others, it’s now relatively simple to create and manipulate images quickly and even generate new images entirely.
So, if you have the perfect image for a job, but the library you sourced it from prohibits its use, this is where AI generated imagery can come into play. Whether you use the image as a basis to carefully craft your image prompt or use an image to image generation method (using the base image as a framework to create an entirely new image), the end image you create will be entirely free of ‘sensitive use’ restrictions.
It’s time to embrace AI
Authentic patient stories and images will always be the gold standard in healthcare communications, creating a genuine and tangible connection with the viewer. However, sometimes this just isn’t possible; in these circumstances, AI can play a significant role in helping to circumvent some of the issues around image use in sensitive areas.
